Bangladesh: Revision and Alignment of National Action Program (NAP) with UNCCD 10-years Strategic Plan and Framework

Background of the project

Bangladeshhas signed the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in 1996. As an obligation the Convention and to address Desertification, Land Degradation and Drought (DLDD) issues inBangladesh, the Department of Environment formulated National Action Programme (NAP) in 2005.

UNCCD formulated 10-year Strategy (2008-2018) under decision 3/COP 8. Later on the Conference of Parties (COP) decided (decision 2/COP 9) to align NAP with the Strategy for enhancing implementation of the Convention. To implement the decision, the GEF allocated 150,000 USD for each country for alignment of NAP and reporting on implementation of the Convention.

It is obligatory forBangladeshto report on implementation of the Convention to the UNCCD secretariat. Moreover, to address DLDD issues under current climate change scenario, it was necessary to update NAP. To align NAP, a project proposal was submitted to the GEF secretariat through the Operation Focal Point, the Secretary, MoEF. After necessary verification and evaluation the GEF approved the project and signed Grant Agreement. Besides NAP alignment, 2012-2013 and 2014-2015 reporting is included in the project.
